Under a degree and a half from the equator

Johor Bahru sits at about 1.49 degrees north and 103.74 degrees east, at the southern tip of the peninsula. It is the closest city on Malaysia's list to the equator, and that produces the flattest annual timetable in the country.

The figure is worth stating precisely because it is so often exaggerated elsewhere. At this latitude the length of the day varies by roughly ten minutes across the entire year — near enough twelve hours of daylight in every month. Fajr, or Subuh, arrives at practically the same point on the clock in June as in December. There is no seasonal drift here worth planning around, and pretending otherwise would be inventing a problem.

The furthest east on the peninsula, and what that gains

At 103.74 degrees east, Johor Bahru is more than two degrees east of Kuala Lumpur, which puts it about eight minutes ahead of the capital on every prayer. Against George Town in the northwest the gap is nearly fourteen minutes.

Malaysia keeps UTC+8 throughout, and the meridian defining that zone runs through 120 degrees east. Even here, at the peninsula's eastern edge, the city is more than sixteen degrees west of that line — around sixty-five minutes of solar time. Malaysian prayer times fall late on the clock for that reason, and Johor Bahru is simply the least late of the peninsula's cities.

Living beside a different time zone

Singapore lies immediately across the strait and keeps the same UTC+8 clock, so the causeway crossing changes nothing about the timetable. The two cities are close enough in longitude that their prayer times differ by well under a minute.

What can differ is the published calculation. Singapore's religious authority sets its own parameters, which are not identical to JAKIM's, so a table produced on one side of the strait may not match one produced on the other even where the astronomy is the same. Anyone crossing daily should know which authority their app is following.

JAKIM's parameters

Subuh is set at 20 degrees of solar depression, Isyak at 18. The 20-degree dawn angle is among the earliest in use anywhere; the international norm is 18 or 18.5.

Practically, near the equator the sun descends almost vertically through twilight, at close to one degree every four minutes, so the Malaysian convention opens Subuh roughly eight minutes before an 18-degree method would. The Malaysia prayer times hub covers the reasoning; this page assumes it.

Asar, and a minority who pray later

Johor follows Shafi'i practice and this table publishes the Shafi'i Asar: the window opens once a vertical object's shadow has extended by one further object-height beyond its shortest measure at midday.

The Hanafi threshold doubles that requirement and falls something like forty to sixty minutes later. A minority in Malaysia follow it. If an app shows an Asar an hour behind the local masjid, the Asar setting is the reason, and both settings correspond to established scholarship.

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque, and where the numbers come from

The Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque overlooks the strait and is the best-known religious building in the city. Congregations across Johor Bahru, from the state mosque down to a surau in a shopping centre, all work from the same astronomical figures.

What varies between them is the gap kept between the azan and the iqamah, which each masjid sets for itself. A few minutes' difference between this page and the moment a congregation actually stands is normal and reflects local practice rather than a disagreement about the sun.

Syuruk, and the imsak convention

Syuruk closes the Subuh window; it is not a prayer. Malaysian timetables customarily add an imsak a short interval before Subuh as a precautionary margin for ending sahur. That margin is convention, not astronomy. This page publishes the calculated Subuh.

A Ramadan that does not shift

Because the boundaries barely move, Ramadan here has a consistency that few places can match. Sahur and berbuka fall at effectively the same clock position on the first night of the month and the last, and a printed calendar holds for all thirty days without needing to be rechecked.

Nor does it matter much which season Ramadan falls in. In countries at higher latitudes the difference between a summer and a winter Ramadan is the difference between a very long fasting day and a short one. In Johor Bahru it is a matter of a few minutes.
