Prayer Times in Damascus, Syria Today

Every winter time on this page reads an hour later than it used to

In October 2022 Syria stopped changing its clocks. The country had previously moved between UTC+2 in winter and UTC+3 in summer; it now stays on UTC+3 in every month. Summer prayer times were unaffected by that decision. Winter ones were shifted by a full hour.

This is the most consequential thing to know before reading the table above. Any printed Damascus timetable produced before 2022, any wall calendar kept from an earlier year, and any app that has not been updated with the current rule will disagree with these figures by exactly one hour for roughly half the year. The sun did not move. The clock stopped moving, which amounts to the same disruption for anyone relying on an old sheet.

Where the capital sits relative to its own clock

Damascus lies at about 33.51 degrees north and 36.28 degrees east. The meridian that defines UTC+3 runs through 45 degrees east, nearly nine degrees further along, and at four minutes to the degree that puts the sun over Damascus some thirty-five minutes behind the clock measuring it.

Since the abolition of the seasonal change, that offset now holds in every month rather than in only half of them. It is the reason Syrian prayer times fall later on the clock than the same prayers at similar latitudes in Iraq or the Gulf.

The angles in use

Syria applies the Egyptian General Authority of Survey convention — 19.5 degrees of solar depression for Fajr, 17.5 for Isha — as do Egypt, Sudan, Libya and Lebanon on this site. The Syria prayer times hub covers it in full.

The consequence worth carrying away is that Isha is set by an angle rather than by a fixed number of minutes after Maghrib. The evening interval between the two therefore widens and narrows across the year instead of holding steady.

Asr, and a city where two schools sit side by side

Damascus has a long Hanafi and Shafi'i presence, and the two schools time Asr differently. Under the Shafi'i threshold — which is what this table publishes, and what the majority of the region's timetables use — Asr opens when a vertical object's shadow has grown by one further object-height beyond its shortest measure at midday. Hanafi reckoning waits for a second such length, and the resulting time falls something like forty minutes to an hour later.

Both are established positions and neither is a mistake. If your app shows an Asr well behind the one announced at a nearby mosque, or well ahead of it, check the Asr setting before anything else. This is by far the most common cause of the discrepancy.

A city that has been keeping these hours a very long time

Damascus is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and the Umayyad Mosque has stood at its centre since the eighth century. Prayer has been timed in this place by shadow-length and by observed twilight for far longer than any of the arithmetic on this page has existed.

The modern calculation is not a departure from that. It reproduces the same definitions — a shadow ratio for Asr, a depression of the sun below the horizon for Fajr and Isha — with the advantage that it can be worked out in advance and does not require a clear sky.

What the sunrise entry is for

Sunrise closes the Fajr window. It is not a prayer and nothing is due when it arrives. Each Ramadan it is mistaken for the beginning of the fast, which is Fajr's role, and with a 19.5-degree dawn angle the two are not close together.

The year at thirty-three and a half degrees north

Daylight in Damascus runs from a little under ten hours around the winter solstice to about fourteen and a half at midsummer. Aleppo, nearly three degrees further north, has a somewhat wider swing than that; the southern position of the capital gives it the steadier year of the two.

With the clock now fixed, all of that movement in the table belongs to the sun alone. A monthly calendar printed here no longer has an hour hidden in it at either end of the season.

Fasting, and reading the month rather than the day

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib. Both boundaries move steadily across the thirty days, so the monthly view is worth opening once at the start rather than checking a single day and assuming it represents the rest.

Mosques frequently announce an imsak a few minutes ahead of the calculated Fajr as a precaution. This page publishes the astronomical figure and leaves that margin where it belongs, with you and your mosque. Given how many older tables are still in circulation, it is also worth confirming that whatever you are reading was produced after the clock rule changed.

Jumu'ah in the capital

The Friday gathering replaces Dhuhr for those who attend, and the call is anchored to the Dhuhr entry above. The interval before the khutbah begins is set by each mosque and varies across the city. Anyone praying at home does so at the ordinary listed Dhuhr time.
