Prayer Times in Tartus, Syria Today

Almost the same longitude as Damascus, a degree and a half further north

Tartus lies at about 34.89 degrees north and 35.89 degrees east, on the Mediterranean coast south of Latakia. Its longitude is close to Damascus's — the difference is under 0.4 degrees, worth about a minute and a half of solar time — but it sits nearly one and a half degrees further north.

That combination is what this page is for. The east-west position barely separates Tartus from the capital, so Dhuhr and Maghrib land within a minute or two of each other. The north-south position does more: a slightly longer summer day and a slightly shorter winter one, which shows up mainly at Fajr and Isha and grows toward the solstices.

Syria's compact spread, in perspective

Tartus and Latakia are separated by about 0.1 degrees of longitude, which is under thirty seconds. Their tables are effectively identical on the longitude axis, and what small difference exists between them comes from Latakia being slightly further north.

Across the whole country the longitude spread is only around five minutes, from this coast to the northeast. That is unusual — many countries this site covers span half an hour or more of genuine solar difference on a single clock. In Syria the useful comparisons between cities are almost entirely about latitude.

The convention applied

Fajr is set at 19.5 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17.5 — the Egyptian General Authority of Survey pair, applied nationally and explained on the Syria prayer times hub. Only the coordinates change from one Syrian city page to the next.

Syria has also been on UTC+3 without seasonal adjustment since 2022. In winter that leaves every time an hour later on the clock than the equivalent figure on a pre-2022 sheet; summer figures were not affected. It is a common source of confusion where old calendars are still in use.

How Asr is reckoned in Tartus

Asr opens here when a vertical object's shadow has lengthened by one further object-height beyond its shortest point at midday. That is the majority threshold and the one the regional convention assumes.

The Hanafi position waits for a second such length and falls roughly forty minutes to an hour later. Both schools have adherents in Syria. An app showing an Asr an hour behind the mosque nearby is almost certainly set to the Hanafi rule, which is a preference rather than a fault.

Sunrise as a closing boundary

The sunrise entry marks the end of the period in which Fajr can still be prayed. It is not itself a prayer. During Ramadan it gets treated as the start of the fast fairly often; that is Fajr's role, and Fajr comes appreciably earlier given the dawn angle in use.

A sea horizon to the west

Like Latakia, Tartus looks west over open water, so the horizon that matters for sunset is close to the flat, unobstructed one the calculation assumes. Inland, terrain and building raise the effective horizon and the sun vanishes from sight slightly before it reaches the true one.

The difference is a fraction of a minute in either case and no timetable adjusts for it. It is worth knowing only because it runs opposite to the usual assumption: a coastal city is where the published sunset is closest to the sunset you can actually watch.

The year at this latitude

Daylight here runs from a little under ten hours around the winter solstice to roughly fourteen and a half at the summer one. That places Tartus between Damascus and the northern cities in terms of seasonal range.

Because Isha is fixed by an angle rather than by a set interval after Maghrib, the evening gap between the two is not stable through the year either. It widens through the summer and closes in winter, so anything routinely scheduled into it needs rechecking as the seasons turn.

The fasting month on the coast

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens the fast, and both move steadily across the thirty days. Opening the monthly view once at the start of the month is more reliable than checking one day and assuming it holds.

Mosques commonly announce an imsak a few minutes before the calculated Fajr as a precautionary margin. This page publishes the astronomical time and leaves that decision with you. A table brought from Latakia will serve here without meaningful error; one brought from Aleppo will not, by about five minutes.

Jumu'ah in a port city

The Friday gathering takes the place of Dhuhr for those attending and is timed from the Dhuhr entry in the table. Each mosque sets its own interval between the call and the khutbah. Anyone praying at home performs Dhuhr at the listed time.

Windows, not instants

A point that matters more in a working port than in most places: the times above mark when each prayer window opens, not the only moment it may be prayed. Every window runs until the next prayer begins, which leaves real room to fit a prayer around a shift.

Fajr is the exception. Its window ends at sunrise, and there is nothing after it to absorb a delay.
