Prayer Times in Fayoum, Egypt Today

A basin with raised ground on every side

Fayoum lies at roughly 29.31 degrees north and 30.84 degrees east, inside a natural depression west of the Nile Valley and fed by the Bahr Yussef channel. It is the only substantial Egyptian settlement on this site that sits away from the river proper, and geographically it is the only one enclosed on all sides.

That enclosure is the practical peculiarity of this page. Every other Egyptian city has at least one clean quadrant of horizon: the Delta towns have flat farmland, Alexandria and Port Said have the sea, Hurghada has open water to the east. Fayoum has escarpment in every direction. The sun therefore clears the visible horizon after the listed sunrise and disappears behind it before the listed sunset, in every season and from almost anywhere in the basin.

Which figure to use anyway

The published one. Prayer calculation the world over assumes a flat, unobstructed horizon at ground level, and it does so deliberately: terrain varies from street to street, and a table adjusted for the ridge you happen to see would not match the table your neighbour uses.

Every mosque in the governorate works from the same unadjusted convention. Sunrise is in any case not a prayer — it marks the end of the window in which Fajr may still be performed — so the mismatch matters mainly at Maghrib, and there the calculated time is the one the congregation is keeping.

A minute and a half behind the capital

Longitude puts Fayoum about two fifths of a degree west of Cairo, which converts to something like a minute and a half. Every prayer here enters that much later than the capital's, on every day of the year.

That is small enough to be inside the ordinary variation between mosques, and anyone commuting to Cairo can use either page without consequence. It is worth noticing only as an illustration of direction: Fayoum is west of the Nile, and west means later, regardless of the fact that the basin is also south of the capital.

Below sea level, and what that is worth

Lake Qarun at the floor of the depression lies below sea level, and the fact is often repeated about this region. Applied to prayer times, it is worth almost nothing.

An observer standing below sea level sees the horizon fractionally raised, which delays sunrise and advances sunset by a few seconds — not minutes. The city itself sits somewhat above the lake in any case. The escarpments described above have an effect measured in minutes; the elevation has one measured in seconds, and neither is modelled in the table.

Where Asr is placed

The afternoon prayer enters here at the Shafi'i and Maliki threshold — an upright object's shadow having grown by the object's own height beyond whatever it cast at midday. The Hanafi school waits for that growth to double, reaching Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later depending on the time of year.

Egypt has both schools in strength, and hearing two different Asr calls in one afternoon is unremarkable. The disagreement is confined to this prayer; Fajr, Dhuhr, Maghrib and Isha are the same under either reading.

How much the year moves things here

At just over twenty-nine degrees north, day length runs from close to fourteen hours at midsummer to a little over ten at midwinter, which is around three and three quarter hours of annual range — near the middle of the Egyptian spread, narrower than the Delta coast and wider than Upper Egypt.

The movement is concentrated in the evening. Dhuhr shifts hardly at all across the year; Maghrib and Isha shift a great deal, and the interval between them changes too, since Isha is fixed by a twilight angle rather than by a set number of minutes after sunset.

Ramadan on irrigated land

Fayoum's agriculture runs on a canal system that has been in use for a very long time, and irrigation work is organised around the early morning and the late afternoon rather than the middle of the day. During Ramadan that pattern fits the fast reasonably well: the heaviest labour falls before the worst of the heat and after Asr.

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar, both drifting steadily through the month, so the monthly view is the practical one. As elsewhere in the country, printed calendars often give an imsak a few minutes ahead of Fajr as a margin of caution; the figure here is the calculated dawn rather than the cautious version.

Friday, direction and neighbouring tables
