South of Cairo, and yet later than Cairo

Minya stands on the west bank of the Nile at about 28.11 degrees north and 30.75 degrees east. Almost everyone assumes that a city two degrees south of the capital must get its prayers earlier. Here it gets them later, by about two minutes on every entry.

The reason is that prayer times follow longitude, and the Nile does not run straight. Between Cairo and Middle Egypt the river swings noticeably west, so Minya ends up roughly half a degree west of the capital despite being well south of it. Half a degree is two minutes of sun. Latitude changes the shape of the year; it does not shift the clock. Longitude shifts the clock, and here it shifts it the opposite way from what the map suggests.

The second-latest table in Egypt

Only Alexandria, out on the far north-west coast, receives each prayer later than Minya does. Every city in the Delta east of Tanta, the whole canal zone, all of Upper Egypt and both Red Sea towns are ahead of this page. Sharm El Sheikh is about fourteen minutes ahead; Hurghada twelve; Aswan eight and a half.

That is worth knowing if you travel. A schedule brought here from Assiut or Sohag will run a little early, and one brought from the Red Sea will run early by more than ten minutes, which is enough to matter at both ends of a fasting day.

What two degrees of latitude do buy

Being further south does change something, just not the offset. It narrows the annual range. Minya's day length runs from roughly thirteen and three quarter hours at midsummer to a little over ten at midwinter — about three and a half hours of travel across the year, against nearly four in the Delta.

In practice that means a slightly shorter summer fast than northern relatives will describe, and slightly less compression of the winter afternoon. The gap is not dramatic between neighbouring governorates, but stacked from Alexandria down to Aswan it amounts to more than an hour of difference in the longest day of the year.

The valley narrows here

Around Minya the desert escarpments close in on the river more tightly than they do further north, and there is high ground within sight on both sides. That raises the visible horizon, so the sun can be lost behind the eastern or western cliffs before the listed sunrise or sunset.

The table makes no allowance for it. Prayer calculation everywhere assumes a level, unobstructed horizon at ground level, and that is the assumption the governorate's mosques work to as well. Following the visible sun instead would leave villages a few kilometres apart keeping different times, which is precisely the outcome a published convention exists to prevent.

Egypt's dawn and nightfall figures

Fajr is calculated at 19.5 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17.5, the General Authority of Survey parameters applied nationally. Nothing about them is adjusted for Middle Egypt; only the coordinates change. The Egypt prayer times hub explains the convention. The country's seasonal clock change moves this table by an hour twice a year.

Which afternoon reckoning appears here

Asr enters at the Shafi'i and Maliki threshold: the point at which an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond its midday minimum. The Hanafi school waits for that growth to double and reaches Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later.

Both schools are found in Egypt, and hearing two different Asr calls is ordinary rather than a sign that something has gone wrong. The disagreement touches Asr alone.

Sahur, and the marker people misread

Sunrise is listed but is not a prayer and does not end the pre-dawn meal. It closes the window in which Fajr may still be prayed, and with Egypt's wide dawn angle that window is long — long enough that mistaking one for the other during Ramadan is a substantial error rather than a marginal one.

Calendars printed locally often give an imsak a few minutes ahead of Fajr as a deliberate cushion. This page publishes the calculated dawn, which is the boundary itself.

Fasting in a mixed governorate

Minya has one of Egypt's larger Christian populations alongside its Muslim majority, and the two communities' calendars run in parallel through the year. During Ramadan the practical consequence is simply that the working day in the city shifts around Fajr and Maghrib for a large share of the population while continuing normally for the rest.

The monthly view is more useful than a single day's figures, because both boundaries of the fast drift steadily across the month, and the interval between Maghrib and Isha changes with the season rather than holding at a fixed number of minutes.

Friday, orientation and other pages

Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending and takes its timing from the Dhuhr entry above; sermon length and the delay before the iqama are set by each mosque. Establish the direction of prayer from your own coordinates with the Qibla direction tool rather than reusing a bearing from elsewhere. The Hijri calendar lists Ramadan and Eid, an Arabic Minya schedule carries the same table, and Assiut prayer times and Fayoum prayer times cover the valley to the south and north.

On Fridays, Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending the mosque. The adhan is called at around the Dhuhr time shown here, but the khutbah and iqamah schedule is set by each mosque individually, so check with the one you attend.
