Roughly a quarter of an hour ahead of the capital

Kassala lies in eastern Sudan near 15.45 degrees north and 36.40 degrees east, close to the Eritrean frontier. It shares its latitude with Khartoum almost exactly, but it sits nearly four degrees further east, and that is the fact that governs this page.

Four degrees of longitude is worth about a quarter of an hour. Every prayer here — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha alike — enters approximately fifteen minutes earlier on the clock than it does in the capital, every day of the year, without exception. The clock itself is identical: Sudan keeps one offset nationwide. It is the sun that arrives earlier.

This is the largest practical reason to use a Kassala table rather than a Khartoum one. Fifteen minutes is not a rounding difference. During Ramadan it is the difference between ending the pre-dawn meal correctly and ending it a quarter of an hour late.

Same clock, different sun

Because the longitude effect applies uniformly to all five prayers, it is easy to reason about. It does not stretch some prayers and compress others, and it does not vary by season. Whatever the date, the offset against the capital holds steady.

What does vary by season is the length of the day itself, and there Kassala and Khartoum behave identically, because that depends on latitude and their latitudes match. The two cities' Fajr times move through the year in lockstep, permanently separated by the same quarter-hour.

The Taka Mountains and the horizon the calculation assumes

The Taka Mountains stand immediately beside the city, which raises a fair question about sunrise and sunset. High ground to the east delays the moment the sun becomes visible, and high ground to the west brings forward the moment it disappears from view.

The table does not model any of that. Prayer time calculations everywhere assume a level, unobstructed horizon, and that convention is what the mosques here are using too. So the sunrise figure listed may well arrive before you can actually see the sun from a street below the hills. Follow the calculated time and the local congregation rather than direct observation — this is the standard everywhere, and the alternative would leave no two people in the city agreeing.

The method, in short

Sudan applies the Egyptian General Authority of Survey parameters: a 19.5-degree dawn angle, a 17.5-degree angle at nightfall, on a UTC+2 clock with no seasonal change. Details are on the Sudan prayer times hub. Only the coordinates differ between Sudanese city pages, and in Kassala's case the coordinates differ enough to matter.

Practice in the east

The Khatmiyya order has a long-established presence in eastern Sudan and is part of the region's religious life. As elsewhere in the country, jurisprudence is predominantly Maliki, and this page follows the corresponding Asr threshold: the prayer enters once an object's shadow exceeds its midday shadow by the object's own height. The Hanafi school waits for a doubling and prays later. Sufi devotional practice runs alongside the five daily prayers rather than altering their timing.

Ramadan

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib. Sunrise appears in the table but bounds neither — it closes the window for praying Fajr. Sudan's wide dawn angle puts a substantial interval between Fajr and sunrise, so the two should not be treated as interchangeable.

Isha is set by a twilight angle rather than a fixed interval after sunset, so the gap between Maghrib and Isha shifts with the season. Consult the monthly view at the start of the month rather than assuming the first day's times will hold.

Friday

Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending and is called at the Dhuhr time shown. Sermon length varies by mosque. Those praying at home pray Dhuhr at its normal listed time.

Travelling west

Anyone moving between Kassala and the capital should change pages rather than carry one across. The quarter-hour offset is consistent and predictable, but it is large enough to matter, and it grows further if you continue west: from here to the far west of the country the total spread approaches three quarters of an hour. Khartoum prayer times cover the capital and Nyala prayer times the western extreme.

Qibla and further resources

Use the Qibla direction tool to determine the direction of prayer from your own coordinates rather than relying on a bearing quoted from memory or another city. The Hijri calendar covers Ramadan and Eid dates, and there is an Arabic Kassala schedule available.
