Wad Madani is the capital of Al Jazirah state and stands on the Blue Nile, near 14.40 degrees north and 33.52 degrees east. The name Gezira means island, and it describes the plain between the Blue and White Niles rather than the city itself — Wad Madani sits on the Blue Nile bank, at the eastern side of that plain.
