Prayer Times in Batna, Algeria Today

In the Aurès, with high ground on every side

Batna lies at about 35.55 degrees north and 6.17 degrees east, in a basin in the Aurès mountains at roughly 1,000 metres. Unlike the coastal cities, it has significant terrain in nearly every direction, including to the east and the west where sunrise and sunset actually occur.

That matters for what you can see, and not at all for what is published. Prayer time calculations everywhere use an idealised horizon — flat, unobstructed, at sea level — and take no account of mountains. In a basin like this one the sun regularly disappears behind a ridge several minutes before the calculated Maghrib, and does not clear the eastern slopes until well after the listed sunrise. The table remains the operative reference, because it is the same reference the mosques are working from. Timing prayer by direct observation would produce a different answer in every valley in the wilaya.

Twelve minutes ahead of Algiers, three ahead of Setif

Batna's longitude, 6.17 degrees east, sits 3.11 degrees east of the capital. At four minutes of solar time to the degree, every prayer here opens about twelve minutes before the corresponding one in Algiers. Setif, on the plateau to the north, is 0.76 degrees west, which puts Batna roughly three minutes ahead of it.

None of this involves a clock change. Algeria keeps UTC+1 across the whole country with no seasonal adjustment, so the offsets are purely a matter of where the sun is. They apply identically to all five prayers and hold in every month of the year.

A degree south of the coastal cities

At 35.55 degrees north, Batna sits roughly a degree and a quarter south of Algiers and Constantine. Latitude is what governs how much the length of the day changes through the year, so Batna has a slightly flatter annual profile than the coast: marginally shorter summer days, marginally longer winter ones.

In practical terms, daylight here runs from around nine and three-quarter hours at the winter solstice to a little over fourteen and a quarter at the summer one. The difference against the northern cities amounts to a matter of minutes at each extreme rather than anything dramatic, but it is real and it is why this page is computed from Batna's own coordinates rather than borrowed from further north.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs sets Fajr at 18 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17 — national parameters, applied without modification to every Algerian city. That pair coincides with the Muslim World League's, so the commonest international default already matches what Batna's mosques announce at Fajr and Isha. The conventions that do differ belong to the neighbours: Tunisia at 18 and 18, and the Egyptian pair of 19.5 and 17.5 used across Libya.

Where the afternoon prayer falls

Practice throughout Algeria is Maliki, and Asr opens on the corresponding threshold: once a vertical object's shadow has grown by one further object-height past its shortest measure at midday.

The Hanafi school waits for a second such length and prays roughly forty minutes to an hour later. Both are long-established positions with serious support, and an app can be set either way. When someone reports that their phone is an hour out from the mosque down the road, this setting is the cause far more often than anything else.

Why sunrise is printed at all

Sunrise appears in the table for one reason: it closes the window in which Fajr may still be prayed. It is not a prayer, and nothing is due at that moment.

It gets treated each Ramadan as the start of the fast, which is incorrect — the fast starts at Fajr, and under an 18-degree dawn angle Fajr comes an appreciable while earlier. Given that the eastern ridges here delay the sun's actual appearance beyond the listed sunrise, the temptation to treat observation as the boundary is stronger in Batna than in most places. It should still be resisted.

Fasting in the Aurès, and the direction of prayer

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib, and both boundaries move steadily across the thirty days. Opening the monthly view once at the start of the month is more reliable than checking a single day and extrapolating. Because there is no seasonal clock change in Algeria, a calendar printed at the beginning of Ramadan remains internally consistent through to the end.

Mosques often announce an imsak a few minutes ahead of the calculated Fajr as a precautionary margin; the figure above is the astronomical one. Note also that a timetable circulated from Algiers is twelve minutes out here, in the direction that delays iftar.
