Prayer Times in Oran, Algeria Today

More than an hour behind its own clock

Oran stands at about 35.70 degrees north and 0.63 degrees west — west of the Greenwich meridian, despite Algeria keeping a clock set an hour ahead of it. The meridian that defines UTC+1 runs through 15 degrees east, which places Oran more than fifteen and a half degrees away from it. At four minutes of solar time to the degree, that is around sixty-two minutes.

The sun over Oran therefore runs more than a full hour behind the clock. Only Tlemcen, further southwest, sits further from the reference line. Against Algiers the gap is smaller but still substantial: Oran is 3.69 degrees west of the capital, which puts every prayer here roughly fifteen minutes later than the corresponding one in Algiers, on the same day and the same clock, for all five prayers and in every season.

Murdjadjo, and the horizon the arithmetic assumes

The Murdjadjo ridge rises directly behind the city, carrying the Santa Cruz fort above the bay. High ground that close to inhabited streets raises an obvious question about when the sun is actually visible, and the honest answer is that the table does not model it.

Prayer time calculations everywhere assume a flat, unobstructed horizon at sea level. Under the western flank of Murdjadjo the sun may disappear from view before the calculated Maghrib, and along the seafront the two will agree closely. Neither observation changes the published figure, because that figure is what the mosques are working to as well. Timing prayer by what each street can see would leave no two neighbourhoods in the city in agreement, which is precisely why the convention exists.

The angles the ministry sets

Algeria's Ministry of Religious Affairs fixes Fajr at 18 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17. The Algeria prayer times hub explains the choice; what matters locally is that these are national parameters and Oran's position does not alter them. Only the moment the sun reaches those depressions changes, and that is decided by these coordinates.

Those two figures are the same as the Muslim World League's, so an app on that widespread default will agree closely with an Oran mosque at Fajr and Isha. Tables built for Tunisia, which sets 18 degrees for both, place Isha a degree later, and the Egyptian pair used across Libya differs at both ends. When a phone disagrees here, the Asr setting is a more likely cause than the twilight angles.

The shadow ratio this table works to

Maliki practice governs across Algeria, and the Asr threshold follows from it. The window opens when a vertical object's shadow has grown by one further object-height beyond whatever it measured when the sun stood at its highest.

Hanafi reckoning requires a second such length and produces an Asr roughly forty to sixty minutes later. Visitors accustomed to that timing — from Turkey, or from South Asia — will find Asr in Oran earlier than expected. Neither is a mistake; the table reflects local practice and an app can be set either way.

How far the table travels between January and July

At just over thirty-five and a half degrees north, daylight in Oran runs from roughly nine and a half hours in midwinter to a little over fourteen and a half at midsummer. Fajr and Maghrib each move well over an hour between their extremes, travelling in opposite directions.

Algeria makes no seasonal clock change, so every bit of that movement belongs to the sun. A monthly calendar printed here stays internally consistent from the first day to the last, with no hour to account for in spring or autumn. What does not stay consistent is the evening gap between Maghrib and Isha, which widens and narrows with the season because Isha is set by an angle rather than by a fixed interval.

Fasting on the western coast

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib, and both boundaries drift measurably across the thirty days. The monthly view is the practical one to consult at the outset; the opening day's figures will not carry to the end of the month.

One local point is worth making plainly. Because Oran's prayers fall about fifteen minutes after the capital's, a timetable shared from Algiers — or a broadcast timed to it — will open iftar a quarter of an hour early here and close the pre-dawn meal a quarter of an hour early too. That is a large enough error to matter every night of the month, and it is entirely avoidable by using the local figures.

Jumu'ah, direction of prayer, and other Algerian cities

The Friday gathering stands in place of Dhuhr for those attending and is timed from the Dhuhr entry above. How long after the adhan the khutbah begins is decided by each mosque, and the larger congregations fill well beforehand. Anyone praying at home performs Dhuhr at the ordinary listed time.
