Eleven hundred metres up, and what altitude actually does to a timetable

Setif stands at about 36.19 degrees north and 5.41 degrees east, on the High Plateaus at roughly 1,100 metres. It is one of the highest cities of any size in Algeria, and the question people reasonably ask is whether that height changes the prayer times.

The honest answer has two parts. In principle, standing high above the surrounding land lowers your visible horizon, so the sun clears it slightly earlier in the morning and drops below it slightly later in the evening. But the effect depends on elevation relative to nearby ground, not on elevation above sea level — and on a plateau, where the surrounding land rises with you, most of it cancels out. Beyond that, prayer time calculations everywhere assume a level sea-level horizon and model no terrain at all. That is the convention the mosques here follow as well, which is why the table and the local call stay in step even where neither matches what a particular street can see.

Nine minutes ahead of the capital

At 5.41 degrees east, Setif sits 2.35 degrees east of Algiers, which puts every prayer here about nine minutes earlier than the capital's. Constantine, further east again, is around five minutes ahead of Setif; Batna, to the south, is roughly three minutes ahead.

These offsets hold for all five prayers, never vary with the season, and involve no clock difference — Algeria keeps UTC+1 nationwide with no daylight saving. They are longitude and nothing else. Across the whole country, from Annaba in the east to Tlemcen in the west, the spread comes to something over half an hour on one clock.

The convention Algeria publishes

Fajr is calculated at 18 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17, the parameters set by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and applied to every Algerian city. The Algeria prayer times hub explains the choice.

Those are also the Muslim World League's figures, so an app on that widespread default will follow Setif's mosques closely at both ends of the day. The conventions that do differ belong to the neighbours: Tunisia uses 18 degrees for both, and the Egyptian pair applied across Libya sets dawn wider at 19.5 and nightfall at 17.5. Where a phone disagrees here, the Asr setting is the more likely culprit.

Winter on the High Plateaus

Setif has real winters. Snow on the plateau is ordinary rather than remarkable, and mornings around the winter solstice are cold and dark well past the Fajr window.

Two practical points follow. Cloud and snow cover do not alter the times: Fajr and Maghrib are defined by the sun's true position below or at the horizon, not by whether it can be seen, so the table stays correct on a day when observation is impossible. And because the window for Fajr closes at sunrise rather than running on to the next prayer, a dark winter morning offers less room than it feels like it should. Every other prayer window stays open until the following prayer begins.

The shadow standard in force

Algeria is Maliki, and the Asr threshold follows. The window opens when a vertical object's shadow has extended by one further object-height beyond its shortest measure at midday.

Hanafi reckoning requires a second such length and arrives roughly forty minutes to an hour later. Both are established readings and neither is a mistake. If a phone shows an Asr close to an hour behind the call heard locally, the Asr setting accounts for it, and that is the first thing to check before concluding anything else is wrong.

How far the year moves things at this latitude

At just over thirty-six degrees north, daylight in Setif runs from around nine and a half hours at midwinter to close to fourteen and a half at midsummer. Fajr and Maghrib each travel well over an hour between their extremes, moving in opposite directions.

The gap between Maghrib and Isha is not constant either, since Isha depends on an angle rather than on a set number of minutes after sunset. It opens out through the summer and draws in over winter. What stays fixed is the clock itself, so a monthly calendar printed here holds from the first day to the last with no seasonal hour concealed in it.

Ramadan on the plateau, and where to go next

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib, with both boundaries drifting steadily across the thirty days. The monthly view is worth opening once at the start rather than reading a single day and assuming it stands. Mosques commonly announce an imsak a few minutes before the calculated Fajr as a precaution; this page publishes the astronomical time and leaves that margin to you and your mosque. A timetable shared from Algiers runs nine minutes late here at both ends of the fasting day.

For direction of prayer, use the Qibla direction tool, which resolves the bearing from your own coordinates rather than from one remembered elsewhere. Ramadan and Eid dates are listed on the Hijri calendar, and Arabic Setif prayer times carry the same table. Nearby, compare Constantine prayer times to the east and Batna prayer times to the south.
