The last city in Algeria to reach Maghrib

Tlemcen sits at about 34.89 degrees north and 1.31 degrees west, in the far southwest near the Moroccan border. It is the westernmost city on Algeria's list, and that makes it the last place in the country the sun sets.

The comparison that carries the most weight is with Annaba, at 7.77 degrees east. Just over nine degrees of longitude separate them — some 800 kilometres in a straight line — and at four minutes of solar time to the degree, that comes to roughly thirty-six minutes. Both cities keep UTC+1, and Algeria makes no daylight saving adjustment anywhere, so not a second of that gap is a clock artefact. When Annaba breaks its fast, Tlemcen still has better than half an hour of daylight ahead of it.

Sixty-five minutes behind the meridian it keeps time by

The line that defines UTC+1 runs through 15 degrees east. Tlemcen lies more than sixteen degrees west of it, which puts the sun here around sixty-five minutes behind the clock — the largest such offset of any city on Algeria's list.

This is why Algerian prayer times, and Tlemcen's most of all, fall so late on the clock by regional standards. It has no bearing on the length of the day or on the intervals between prayers. It shifts the entire table later, uniformly, in every season, and it is worth understanding rather than puzzling over.

The Great Mosque, and a very old record of timekeeping here

The Great Mosque of Tlemcen dates from the Almoravid period and has stood at the centre of the city for the better part of a thousand years. The ruined minaret at Mansourah, on the western approach, belongs to a later chapter of the same long history. Tlemcen was for a long stretch one of the principal centres of learning in the western Maghreb.

Prayer was timed in this city by shadow length and by observed twilight for centuries before anyone published a calculated table. The modern arithmetic is not a departure from that practice. It applies the same definitions — a shadow ratio for Asr, a depression of the sun below the horizon for Fajr and Isha — in a form that can be worked out in advance and does not require a clear sky.

Isha at seventeen degrees

Algeria's Ministry of Religious Affairs fixes Fajr at 18 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17. That pair is identical to the Muslim World League's, which is worth knowing: the single most widely used international default already matches the Algerian convention at both ends of the day.

The conventions that genuinely differ are the immediate neighbours'. Tunisia sets both Fajr and Isha at 18 degrees, so a Tunisian table puts Isha a degree of depression later. Morocco, and the Egyptian convention used across Libya, differ again at dawn as well as at nightfall. When an app disagrees with a Tlemcen mosque, the Asr school setting is a far more likely explanation than the twilight angles. The Algeria prayer times hub covers the national convention in full.

The afternoon threshold in use here

Tlemcen follows Maliki practice, as Algeria does throughout. Asr opens once a vertical object's shadow has lengthened by one further object-height beyond whatever it measured when the sun stood at its highest.

Hanafi reckoning doubles that requirement and produces an Asr something like forty to sixty minutes later. Both readings are old and defensible, and this table commits to the one Algerian mosques announce. Anyone following the Hanafi position should set their app accordingly rather than treat the published figure as an error.

Elevation, the plateau above the city, and the horizon

Tlemcen sits at around 800 metres, beneath the escarpment that carries the Lalla Setti plateau above the town. High ground close at hand always raises the question of whether the visible sunrise and sunset match the published ones.

They often will not, and the table does not attempt to reconcile them. Prayer time calculations model a flat, unobstructed, sea-level horizon everywhere in the world. Under an escarpment the sun leaves view before the calculated Maghrib; on the plateau above, it stays visible a little longer. Neither observation changes the figure to follow, since the mosques below and above the escarpment are working from the same calculated table.

Ramadan in the far west, and finding the direction

The fast runs from Fajr to Maghrib, and both boundaries drift steadily across the thirty days, so the monthly view is worth consulting once at the start of the month. Mosques commonly announce an imsak a few minutes before the calculated Fajr as a margin of caution; this page publishes the astronomical time and leaves that decision to you.

The local warning is a serious one. Because Tlemcen's times are the latest in Algeria, any table circulated from Algiers is around seventeen minutes early here, and one from Annaba is more than half an hour early. Following either would mean breaking the fast well before Maghrib has arrived. Use the local figures.

For direction of prayer, use the Qibla direction tool, which resolves the bearing from your own coordinates. Ramadan and Eid dates are on the Hijri calendar, and Arabic Tlemcen prayer times carry the same table. The nearest comparison is Oran prayer times to the north, and the widest contrast is Annaba prayer times at the eastern end of the country.
