Libya's earliest prayers, by more than half an hour

Bayda stands at roughly 32.76 degrees north and 21.76 degrees east, on the Jebel Akhdar in the far northeast. It is the easternmost city on Libya's list, and that single fact governs everything below.

Zawiya, at the opposite end of the country, sits at 12.73 degrees east. Nine degrees of longitude separate the two — around 850 kilometres — and since each degree is worth four minutes of solar time, the gap comes to roughly thirty-six minutes. Bayda's Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha all open more than half an hour before Zawiya's, every day of the year, on a clock that is identical in both places. Libya keeps UTC+2 nationally with no seasonal change, so nothing here is an artefact of timekeeping.

Altitude, and the honest limit of what the calculation models

Bayda sits high on the Jebel Akhdar, several hundred metres above the coastal plain, and it is fair to ask whether that changes sunrise and sunset. In principle, height above the surrounding terrain lowers the visible horizon, bringing sunrise forward and pushing sunset back.

In practice, two things limit it. The effect depends on elevation relative to nearby ground, not on elevation above sea level, and on a plateau where the surrounding land rises with you, much of it cancels. More importantly, prayer time calculations do not model terrain at all — everywhere in the world they assume a level, unobstructed, sea-level horizon. That is the convention the mosques here are working to as well, so the table and the local call agree with each other even where neither matches what you can see from a particular street.

The national parameters

Fajr is set at 19.5 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17.5, the Egyptian General Authority of Survey pair applied to every Libyan city. The Libya prayer times hub explains the choice. Only the coordinates change between Libyan pages, and Bayda's change them more than most.

Comparing east with west

Benghazi, the nearest large city, is about 1.7 degrees west, which puts Bayda roughly seven minutes ahead of it. Misrata is around twenty-seven minutes behind, and Tripoli around thirty-four. These offsets hold for every prayer and never vary through the year, which makes them easy to reason about but also easy to underestimate.

The reason to say so is practical. Families spread between Cyrenaica and Tripolitania frequently share a single timetable, and in Ramadan that habit puts one end of the family more than half an hour out at both boundaries of the fasting day.

Asr in a Maliki region

Asr here follows the Maliki threshold used throughout Libya: the window opens once a vertical object's shadow has lengthened by one additional object-height beyond its shortest point at midday. The Hanafi position requires a second such length and arrives roughly forty minutes to an hour later.

An app showing a noticeably later Asr than the mosque down the road is almost always set to the Hanafi rule. That is a setting, not a fault.

What sunrise marks

Sunrise is published so you can see where the Fajr window closes. No prayer falls at that moment. It is frequently confused with the start of the Ramadan fast, which begins at Fajr instead, well before the sun appears.

The year on the Green Mountain

At close to thirty-three degrees north, daylight runs from a little under ten hours in midwinter to a little over fourteen hours at the height of summer. Fajr and Maghrib each move more than an hour across that span, in opposite directions.

Isha is fixed by an angle rather than by a set number of minutes after Maghrib, so the evening interval between the two also breathes across the year — wider in one season, tighter in another. Anything built into that gap should be re-checked when the seasons turn.

Ramadan at the eastern edge

The fast runs Fajr to Maghrib, both listed above, and both drift steadily over the thirty days. The monthly view is the one to consult at the start of the month; the first day's figures will not hold to the last.

Mosques commonly announce an imsak some minutes before the calculated Fajr as a precaution. This page publishes the astronomical time and leaves any margin to you. What it will not do is quietly absorb the half-hour offset against western Libya, so a table forwarded from Tripoli should be replaced rather than adjusted by eye.

Jumu'ah on the Jebel

For those who attend, the Friday gathering stands in place of Dhuhr and is timed from the Dhuhr entry above. Mosques differ over how long after the call the khutbah begins. Anyone not attending prays Dhuhr in the ordinary way at the listed time.

Keeping a copy, and a note on connectivity

Services in eastern Libya have been intermittent for years and network access at a particular hour is not something to count on. Because there is no seasonal clock change, a monthly table saved or printed once stays valid for the whole month, which makes keeping an offline copy a simple and durable fix.
