Prayer Times in Benghazi, Libya Today

Nearly half an hour ahead of Tripoli, every day of the year

Benghazi lies at about 32.12 degrees north and 20.07 degrees east, on the Gulf of Sidra. Tripoli sits almost seven degrees of longitude to the west. Since four minutes of solar time separate each degree, every prayer in Benghazi opens close to twenty-eight minutes earlier on the clock than the same prayer in the capital.

That offset is the single most important thing on this page. It applies identically to all five prayers, it does not change with the season, and it never narrows, because both cities keep the same clock. A household in Benghazi following a schedule shared from Tripoli would be almost half an hour late at every boundary of the day, and during Ramadan that error falls in the two places where it costs the most.

Asr under the Maliki rule

Legal practice in Cyrenaica, as across Libya, is Maliki, and the Asr threshold in this table follows it. Take the shadow a vertical object casts when the sun is at its highest point. Asr begins once that shadow has extended by a further amount equal to the object's own height. The Hanafi school waits for twice that extension and prays appreciably later — commonly forty minutes to an hour further into the afternoon.

Visitors accustomed to Hanafi timing, whether from Turkey or from South Asia, will find Asr here earlier than expected. Neither position is an error. The table commits to the one Libyan mosques announce.

The parameters, taken as read

Libya applies the Egyptian General Authority of Survey figures: 19.5 degrees of solar depression for Fajr, 17.5 for Isha. These are national settings, not local ones, so nothing about Benghazi's position changes them — only the moment the sun reaches those depressions at this longitude and latitude. An open sea horizon, and what it does not change

Much of Benghazi faces open water, which raises a reasonable question about sunrise and sunset. The answer is that the calculation neither knows nor cares. Prayer times everywhere are computed against an idealised sea-level horizon with no terrain and no buildings in the way.

On a coast like this one, that assumption happens to be close to what an observer actually sees, which is not true inland or in a city hemmed in by high ground. So the listed sunset and the observed one agree here more nearly than they do in most of the country. The difference either way is well under a minute, and no one should be adjusting a timetable for it.

Seasonal range on the Cyrenaican coast

At just over thirty-two degrees north, the daylight span moves from a little under ten hours in midwinter to a little over fourteen at midsummer. Fajr and Maghrib each travel more than an hour across the year in opposite directions, and the night prayer follows Maghrib rather than sitting a fixed distance behind it, because Isha is set by an angle rather than by an interval.

That last point matters in practice. The gap between Maghrib and Isha widens in one season and narrows in another. Anything planned around that gap — a meal, a class, a drive across the city — will not keep the same shape all year.

What sunrise is doing in the table

Sunrise is not a prayer and nothing is due when it appears. It marks the end of the period in which Fajr remains valid, which is why it is published. Each Ramadan it gets confused with the start of the fast; the fast starts at Fajr, which with a 19.5-degree dawn angle comes a good while earlier.

The fasting month in the east

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens the fast. Both drift steadily through the thirty days, so the monthly view is the one to consult at the outset rather than assuming the first day's figures will carry through.

Many mosques announce an imsak a few minutes ahead of the calculated Fajr as a precaution. This page publishes the astronomical figure and leaves that margin to you and your mosque. Note too that a table taken from Tripoli, or from a relative there, carries the twenty-eight-minute offset with it in the wrong direction.

Jumu'ah in the second city

The Friday gathering stands in place of Dhuhr for those attending, and the call is timed off the Dhuhr entry above. Sermon length is the imam's business, and mosques differ over how long after the adhan they begin. Anyone not attending prays Dhuhr at the listed time in the usual way.

A note on keeping a copy

Benghazi has been through long stretches of disrupted services, and network access is not something to assume at the hour you need it. Saving or printing the monthly table at the start of a month is a small habit that removes the dependence entirely, and the figures do not change once published, since Libya makes no seasonal clock adjustment.
