Prayer Times in Sabha, Libya Today

Six degrees south of the coast, and a different year because of it

Sabha lies at about 27.04 degrees north and 14.43 degrees east, deep in the Fezzan, roughly 650 kilometres inland from the Mediterranean. Every other Libyan city on this site sits on the coastal strip between 32 and 33 degrees north. Sabha is nearly six degrees south of all of them, and that is what makes this page different rather than merely a shifted copy of Tripoli's.

Latitude controls how much the length of the day changes through the year. On the coast, daylight swings from a little under ten hours in midwinter to a little over fourteen at midsummer. Here the same swing is roughly an hour narrower at both ends: shorter summer days, longer winter ones, and a flatter year overall. Sabha's fasting day in a summer Ramadan is meaningfully shorter than Tripoli's.

Longitude barely separates it from the capital

Sabha's longitude, 14.43 east, is only 1.24 degrees from Tripoli's, worth about five minutes. So on the east-west axis this city is almost a coastal one: five minutes ahead of the capital, some eight minutes behind Misrata, and around twenty-nine minutes behind Bayda.

The useful way to read that is to separate the two effects. Longitude decides where the whole table sits on the clock, and Sabha is close to Tripoli on that count. Latitude decides how far the table moves between January and July, and on that count Sabha is on its own.

The angles Libya publishes

Dawn is calculated at 19.5 degrees of solar depression and nightfall at 17.5 — the Egyptian General Authority of Survey convention, applied nationally and explained on the Libya prayer times hub.

Twilight angles behave differently at different latitudes, and this is one of the few places in Libya where that is worth noticing. The further south you go, the more steeply the sun descends through the twilight band, and the less time it spends crossing those 19.5 and 17.5 degrees. Fajr therefore sits closer to sunrise here than on the coast, and Isha closer to sunset.

A desert horizon and the calculation's assumptions

The Fezzan offers about as clean a horizon as exists anywhere — flat, open, no terrain and little building to obstruct the low sun. That makes Sabha one of the few places where the idealised horizon the calculation assumes is close to the one actually in front of you.

What can still interfere is dust. During a haboob or in heavy suspended sand the sun becomes invisible well before it sets and reappears well after it rises. That does not move the prayer time. Maghrib is defined by the sun's true position, not by whether you can see it, so the table remains correct on a day when observation is impossible.

Asr and the Maliki threshold

Practice throughout Libya is Maliki, and Asr opens once a vertical object's shadow has extended by one further object-height past its midday minimum. The Hanafi rule doubles that and lands roughly forty to sixty minutes later.

At this latitude the midday sun stands higher than it does on the coast, so the shortest shadow is shorter, and the geometry that follows differs slightly from what a Tripoli resident is used to. The rule is unchanged; only the sun's angle is.

Sunrise is a boundary, not an appointment

The sunrise entry closes the window in which Fajr can still be prayed. Nothing is due at that moment. During Ramadan it is often taken for the start of the fast, which is wrong — the fast begins at Fajr, and Libya's wide dawn angle puts a real distance between the two.

Ramadan in the Fezzan

The fasting day runs Fajr to Maghrib, and both boundaries move across the thirty days. The monthly table is the practical view; a single day's figures will not represent the month.

The southern latitude is worth keeping in mind when comparing notes with relatives on the coast. In a summer Ramadan the fasting day here is shorter than theirs; in a winter one it is longer. Neither table is wrong, and neither should be substituted for the other.

Friday in the Fezzan's principal city

Jumu'ah takes the place of Dhuhr for those attending, timed from the Dhuhr entry above. Mosques set their own interval between the call and the start of the khutbah. Those praying at home use the listed Dhuhr time as normal.

Heat, and when the windows actually get used

Summer afternoons here are severe, and daily routines in the Fezzan shift accordingly. It is worth remembering that each prayer window stays open until the next one begins, so Dhuhr does not have to be prayed at the moment it opens; it can be prayed at any point before Asr. That flexibility is built into the timings themselves and is not a concession.

Fajr is the exception, since its window ends at sunrise rather than running into the following prayer. It is the one boundary in the table with no slack after it.
