Prayer Times in Libya — All Cities

Libyan prayer times here follow the convention of the Egyptian General Authority of Survey, with Fajr at 19.5 degrees of solar depression and Isha at 17.5. Libya keeps a single clock at UTC+2 with no seasonal change, yet stretches far enough east to west that Maghrib in Bayda arrives well before Maghrib in Zawiya.

Five cities at one latitude, and one far to the south

Libyan coverage on this site has an unusual shape. Tripoli, Zawiya, Misrata, Benghazi and Bayda all sit within a single degree of latitude, between roughly 32.1 and 32.9 degrees north, strung along the Mediterranean over a distance of some nine hundred kilometres. Sabha is the exception. It lies about six hundred kilometres inland at 27 degrees north, in the Fezzan.

The practical consequence is that the five coastal cities differ from one another almost entirely because of longitude, while Sabha differs from all of them almost entirely because of latitude. Those two kinds of difference behave in opposite ways. A longitude difference is close to fixed through the year, so the gap between Tripoli and Benghazi is much the same in January as in July. A latitude difference is seasonal, so the gap between Tripoli and Sabha opens and closes as the year turns.

Thirty-six minutes of sun between Zawiya and Bayda

Zawiya lies near 12.7 degrees east and Bayda near 21.8 degrees east, a separation of just over nine degrees of longitude. The earth turns through one degree every four minutes, so the sun reaches Bayda roughly thirty six minutes before it reaches Zawiya, and every solar event of the day follows suit. Tripoli to Benghazi, the more common comparison, comes to close to twenty eight minutes.

All six cities nevertheless read from the same clock. Libya keeps UTC+2 the whole year round and makes no seasonal adjustment; it tried a different arrangement in 2012 and 2013 and then settled back where it had been. Because that clock is centred on the thirtieth meridian, and every Libyan city lies west of it, solar noon arrives noticeably after midday by the clock, and later still in the west of the country than in the east. Dhuhr in Zawiya is a late affair by the clock even though nothing unusual is happening in the sky.

Sabha and a different year in the Fezzan

Sabha stands at 27 degrees north, and its position changes the shape of the year more than it changes the shape of any single day. Between the longest and the shortest day, daylight on the coast varies by something over four hours. At Sabha the same figure is closer to three and a half. Summer days there are shorter than in Tripoli, and winter days are longer.

For a timetable that means the coast and the Fezzan trade places through the year. In midsummer Maghrib in Tripoli falls a few minutes after Maghrib in Sabha, because the northern city has the longer day. In midwinter this reverses and Tripoli reaches sunset the better part of twenty minutes earlier. Fajr moves as the mirror image of it. Anyone travelling between the coast and the south should read the page for the city they are actually in rather than carry a coastal timetable inland.

Egyptian angles in a Maliki country

The angles behind these figures are Egyptian, but the jurisprudence is not. Libya is overwhelmingly Maliki, and on the start of Asr the Maliki position is the one shared with the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools: the prayer begins once an upright object casts a shadow equal to its own length, over and above the shadow it already cast at solar noon. That is the reckoning applied to every Libyan city listed here.

This is worth stating precisely because Libya shares its calculation convention with Egypt, where the picture is less uniform. Egypt has substantial Hanafi practice, and the Hanafi measure waits for the shadow to double, placing Asr roughly forty to sixty minutes later. In Libya that second time is not the local norm, so a Libyan timetable tends to be read the same way everywhere. Cyrenaica, the eastern region containing Benghazi and Bayda, also has a long association with the Sanusi order, though that bears on devotional life rather than on the calculated start of a prayer.

Why the times come from an angle rather than the eye

Fajr and Isha are the two prayers with no visible marker as sharp as sunrise or sunset. Both are defined by twilight, and twilight is a gradient rather than an event. The Egyptian convention resolves this by fixing a number: dawn when the sun stands 19.5 degrees below the horizon, night when it stands 17.5 degrees below it. That is a decision about where in the gradient to draw the line, and it is the same decision wherever the convention is applied.

Libya illustrates the point unusually well, because it contains both kinds of sky. On the Mediterranean strip the air carries sea haze and moisture, which scatters light and can leave the western sky bright long after the sun has gone. In the dry air over Sabha, twilight looks cleaner and shorter to the eye. The calculated time does not change between the two, and that consistency is the reason a published angle is used at all, rather than a judgement made at a window.
