The northern end of Qatar's timetable

Al Khor lies near 25.68 degrees north on the peninsula's north-eastern coast, making it the northernmost of the Qatari municipalities covered on this site and roughly fifty kilometres up the coast from the capital. It is therefore the place where Qatar's internal variation, such as it is, shows up most clearly — though "most clearly" still means a difference you have to look for.

Latitude is what separates this page from the capital's

Al Khor sits at almost exactly Doha's longitude, so the east-west effect that distinguishes most Qatari towns from one another is absent here. What remains is latitude, and latitude behaves differently from longitude in one important respect: its effect is not constant through the year.

Around the equinoxes, when day and night are near enough equal everywhere, Al Khor and Doha are effectively identical. Approaching midsummer, being further north lengthens the day, so sunrise here comes a little earlier and Maghrib a little later than in the capital — on the order of a minute and a half at the solstice. In midwinter the relationship inverts and the northern position shortens the day instead. Dhuhr, which depends on longitude rather than latitude, barely moves at all in either season.

A minute and a half is the largest gap between any two Qatari municipalities on any day of the year, and it appears for only a few weeks around June. For most of the calendar the figure is smaller than that, and often much smaller.

The parameters, in short

The national method applies unchanged: an eighteen-degree solar depression for Fajr, Isha entered a fixed ninety minutes after Maghrib, and Asr by the majority shadow rule. Why Isha never drifts away from Maghrib here

Because Qatar defines Isha as an interval rather than an angle, the night prayer is locked to sunset by a constant ninety minutes at every latitude in the country and in every month. Al Khor's slightly longer summer twilight, which under an angle-based method would push Isha later, has no effect at all. Whatever Maghrib does, Isha does an hour and a half afterwards. It is a simpler evening than most countries get.

Asr, and the shadow you are measuring

The rule used here is that Asr begins once an object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond the shadow it cast at noon. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholarship converges on this, and Hanbali practice is dominant in Qatar, so the figure should match local mosque boards. The Hanafi school sets the threshold at a doubled shadow and arrives at a later time; the gap between the two positions varies seasonally and can approach an hour. If your family follows that school, adjust the setting rather than assuming this page has erred.

Sunrise is in the table, but it is not a prayer

The sunrise row exists because it closes the window during which Fajr can still be prayed — not because it has anything to do with the start of a fast. That boundary is Fajr itself, earlier in the morning. The distinction matters most in Ramadan, when the two are sometimes conflated and the pre-dawn meal gets cut short by mistake.

Ramadan on Qatar's northern coast

Fajr and Maghrib both migrate across the thirty days, and the size of that migration depends on where in the solar year Ramadan happens to land. Al Khor's northern position means it experiences those seasonal effects a fraction more strongly than the rest of the country, but the practical difference against Doha remains under two minutes at its most extreme. The monthly table is the thing to consult; a single day's figures will not represent the month.

Jumu'ah and the size of the Friday congregation

Jumu'ah substitutes for Dhuhr for those attending, and the call goes out at the Dhuhr time shown above. Congregation size and sermon length vary by mosque. Those who do not attend pray Dhuhr at its normal listed time, unchanged.

Travelling south

Anyone commuting between here and the capital can use either table without consequence. The gap is small enough that switching pages mid-journey achieves nothing.
