Calculation method: Qatar
Two towns, one timetable
Umm Salal is an inland municipality north of the capital, and its name attaches to two separate towns — Umm Salal Mohammed and Umm Salal Ali — along with the residential areas around them. The calculation on this page uses a single representative point near 25.42 degrees north, 51.40 degrees east, and covers all of it.
That is not a compromise. The two towns are close enough together that the astronomical difference between them is a matter of a few seconds, far below the threshold at which anyone could act on it. Publishing separate tables for each would imply a precision that has no counterpart in reality.
The furthest west of Qatar's municipalities on this site
Umm Salal sits at a slightly lower longitude than the rest of the Qatari cities covered here, and longitude has a clean, uniform effect: the further west you stand, the later the sun arrives, at roughly four minutes per degree. Umm Salal's westward displacement from Doha amounts to well under a minute, applied evenly to all five prayers rather than concentrated in any one of them.
Its latitude sits between the capital's and the northern coast's, so its seasonal behaviour also falls between theirs — marginally more summer daylight than Doha, marginally less than Al Khor. Both effects together keep this page within about a minute of every other Qatari table throughout the year.
Praying at home
Umm Salal is substantially residential, which means a higher proportion of prayers here are prayed at home than in the commercial and industrial parts of the country. Home prayer uses the same calculated times, with one difference in practice: there is no iqama delay to account for. The gap people notice between a mosque's congregation and the adhan does not exist when you pray alone or with your household — you pray from the calculated time onward, within the window for that prayer.
This is the setting in which a table like this one is most directly useful, because there is no loudspeaker mediating between the calculation and the act. It is also why the distinction between adhan and iqama is worth understanding: someone praying at home and someone praying at the mosque down the road are both correct even though they start several minutes apart.
An inland municipality, and why that changes nothing
Unlike most of the places covered on this site, Umm Salal is not on the coast and has no open sea horizon. People sometimes assume this ought to affect Maghrib, on the reasoning that a sunset behind buildings or rising ground is not the same event as a sunset over water. It does not affect the table. Calculated prayer times everywhere assume a level, unobstructed horizon at ground level, which is the convention every published timetable follows, including the one your local mosque uses. What you can or cannot see from where you happen to be standing does not enter the arithmetic.
The parameters, referenced not repeated
Qatar's national method governs this page: eighteen degrees of solar depression at dawn, Isha ninety minutes after Maghrib, Asr on the majority shadow rule, and a fixed UTC+3 offset that never shifts for summer time. The Qatar prayer times hub explains the choices and the Hanafi Asr alternative in full.
Asr, and why two households here may differ
The threshold applied is a shadow grown by the height of the object casting it, measured past the midday shadow — the position of the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, and the one Qatari mosques post. The Hanafi school waits for a doubled shadow and prays later, by a margin that shifts with the season and can approach an hour at its widest. In a residential municipality with a mixed population this shows up in ordinary ways: neighbours praying Asr at visibly different times, both correctly, according to the school each follows.
Ramadan in a residential area
The fast opens at Fajr and closes at Maghrib. Sunrise appears in the table for a different reason — it ends the window in which Fajr may be prayed — and confusing it with the start of the fast is a common and costly mistake. Because Isha is fixed at ninety minutes after Maghrib, the run from iftar to taraweeh keeps the same length every night, which makes household scheduling easier than it is in countries where the gap moves. Across the month itself, both Fajr and Maghrib drift steadily, so the monthly view is worth opening at the outset.
Jumu'ah at the local jami'
Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending, called at the Dhuhr time listed. Local jami' fill from the late morning. Those praying at home, including women who are not obliged to attend, pray Dhuhr at its usual time as shown.
What the year does
The annual range at this latitude runs to something around an hour and a half for Fajr between its earliest and latest points, with Maghrib covering similar ground the other way. Since Qatar keeps one clock offset in every month, all of that is solar motion presented without interference.
Qibla and companion pages
The Qibla direction tool will resolve the direction of prayer from your coordinates, which is more reliable than working from a remembered bearing or an indoor compass reading. For Ramadan and Eid dates, see the Hijri calendar; Arabic readers can use the Arabic Umm Salal schedule. Adjacent municipalities are covered by Al Rayyan prayer times and Al Daayen prayer times.

Why does Isha in Umm Salal stay the same distance from sunset all year?
Because the convention applied here defines Isha as a fixed interval after Maghrib rather than as a twilight angle. Isha therefore sits the same distance from sunset throughout the year. In countries that use an angle instead, Isha drifts closer to or further from Maghrib as the seasons change.
Are Friday (Jumu'ah) times different in Umm Salal?
On Fridays, Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending the mosque. The adhan is called at around the Dhuhr time shown here, but the khutbah and iqamah schedule is set by each mosque individually, so check with the one you attend.
