Prayer Times in Lusail, Qatar Today

A new city running on a very old calculation

Lusail was built from nothing, on reclaimed and previously empty ground north of the capital, and it is one of the few cities in the world where the street grid is younger than most of the people living on it. None of that changes the timetable. The figures above come from Lusail's coordinates near 25.42 degrees north, 51.50 degrees east, applied to a method that predates the city by a very long way. Astronomy does not take note of when the concrete was poured.

What the newness does affect is the practical texture of praying here — where the congregations are, how the buildings interact with the horizon, and how much of the district's routine is still settling.

Height, horizon, and why the fortieth floor does not get its own Maghrib

Lusail has more tall towers per square kilometre than anywhere else in Qatar, which surfaces a question most cities never raise: if you can see further from a high floor, does the sun set later for you?

Physically, yes, marginally. Elevation lowers the visible horizon, so an observer high above ground sees the sun's disc disappear slightly after someone at street level does. Standard prayer tables, including this one, do not model that. They compute for an observer at ground level with a level horizon, which is the convention essentially every published timetable follows and the one the mosques around you are using.

The practical guidance is straightforward: pray with the calculated time and with your local congregation, not with what you can see from a balcony. The effect is small, it is not what the mosque downstairs is doing, and breaking a fast by looking out of a window rather than by the published Maghrib is the wrong way round.

Where Lusail sits relative to everywhere else in Qatar

Roughly fifteen kilometres north of central Doha and on nearly the same meridian. That puts Lusail's prayer times within a handful of seconds of the capital's for most of the year, opening to perhaps half a minute around midsummer when the latitude difference has its greatest effect on day length. The built-up areas of Lusail and Doha are close to continuous, and their timetables are effectively continuous too.

The method, in passing

Qatar's national parameters govern this page as they do every other Qatari city: eighteen degrees of solar depression for Fajr, Isha placed ninety minutes after Maghrib by the clock, and Asr on the majority shadow rule. Prayer in an office and tower district

Much of Lusail is workplace rather than home, and workplace prayer follows a different rhythm to neighbourhood prayer. Tower musallas and floor prayer rooms usually set an iqama some minutes after the calculated adhan so that people can come down from wherever they are. That delay is a building's decision, not a variant calculation, and it explains nearly every difference you will notice between a lobby noticeboard and this page.

Asr is the prayer most likely to be missed here, because it falls inside the working afternoon rather than at a natural break. It is worth knowing the shape of your own day against the table rather than waiting to hear something.

Which Asr this page uses

The threshold applied is a shadow that has lengthened by the height of the object casting it, measured beyond the midday shadow. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali positions agree on this and it matches the boards in Qatari mosques. The Hanafi school waits for the shadow to double, producing a later Asr by a margin that changes with the season and can approach an hour. Both are valid; the table has to choose, and it chooses the majority.

Ramadan in a district still finding its habits

Fajr ends the pre-dawn meal, Maghrib opens the fast, and both move steadily through the month. Sunrise is listed separately and does not bound the fast — it closes the window for praying Fajr. Because Isha is pinned to Maghrib by a fixed ninety minutes, the interval from iftar to taraweeh is constant across the whole month and across all seasons, which makes evening scheduling here unusually predictable. Consult the monthly view rather than extrapolating from a single day.

Fridays

Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending and is called at the Dhuhr time shown. In a district with a high proportion of workplaces, Friday attendance patterns are less local than in an established residential area, and many people pray where they live rather than where they work. Those not attending pray Dhuhr normally.

The year's range at this latitude

Twenty-five degrees north gives a moderate seasonal spread: Fajr covers something around an hour and a half between its extremes, Maghrib a similar distance in reverse. Since the clock is fixed year-round, every bit of that movement is genuine solar motion rather than an artefact of changing the time.
