A city whose times are the capital's times

Ariana lies at roughly 36.86 degrees north and 10.19 degrees east, immediately north of Tunis and continuous with it. The gap between the two city centres is about five kilometres. In astronomical terms that is nothing at all: five kilometres of northward displacement and a hundredth of a degree of longitude change the moment the sun crosses any given altitude by a fraction of a second.

It is worth stating that plainly at the top of the page rather than implying a distinctiveness that does not exist. If you compare this table with the one published for Tunis, the two will agree to the minute on every prayer, every day of the year. Nothing here is rounded differently or calculated differently. Ariana has its own page because it is its own governorate seat with close to half a million residents, not because its sun behaves differently from the capital's.

What is genuinely local, then

What differs between Ariana and Tunis is not the timetable but the practice built on it. Ariana grew rapidly from a market town into a dense residential governorate, and much of its housing stock and its mosque network dates from that expansion rather than from the medina tradition further south. The practical consequence for a worshipper is the density and spacing of neighbourhood jawami rather than any variation in the underlying figures.

That matters when you are deciding how much time you need between the adhan you hear and the iqama you intend to reach. In a governorate of newer, more spread-out districts, the walk is often longer than it would be inside an old quarter, and mosques set their iqama intervals accordingly.

The figures the ministry sets

Tunisia applies a single national convention published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and it is applied here exactly as it is everywhere else in the country. Fajr and Isha are both set at eighteen degrees of solar depression, which is a symmetrical arrangement and not the most common one internationally. Egypt, whose convention governs much of North Africa, uses 19.5 and 17.5. Tunisia does not follow it.

Shadow length and the Asr threshold

Tunisia is Maliki, and the Maliki position on Asr matches the Shafi'i and Hanbali one: the prayer begins when an object's shadow has grown to equal its own length, measured on top of the shadow it already cast at solar noon. That is the reckoning behind the Asr time in this table.

The Hanafi threshold is twice the object's length rather than once, which places Asr roughly forty to sixty minutes later depending on the season. Very few mosques in Tunisia work to it, but if you have moved here from a Hanafi country and are used to a later Asr, the difference you are noticing is that one, and it is a difference of school rather than a fault in the calculation.

Where the year takes the times

At close to thirty-seven degrees north, Ariana sits at the northern end of the Tunisian range, and the seasonal spread here is correspondingly wide for the country. Midsummer nights are short and Isha is pushed late; midwinter compresses the whole afternoon so that Asr, Maghrib and Isha crowd into a few hours.

Tunisia keeps a fixed offset year round and does not move its clocks, so every bit of that movement is genuine astronomy rather than an artefact of a seasonal time change. When Maghrib shifts by a minute or two from one day to the next in this table, the sun really has moved. There is no changeover weekend where the whole schedule jumps by an hour, which makes a printed monthly calendar reliable from the first of the month to the last.

Ramadan in a commuter governorate

Ariana's population is heavily oriented towards Tunis for work, and during Ramadan that shapes the day more than the timetable does. Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar, both of them listed here for every day of the month in the monthly view, which is more practical than checking a single day at a time when you are planning a commute around them.

As elsewhere in the country, some mosques and printed almanacs announce an imsak a few minutes before the calculated Fajr as a margin of caution. This page publishes the astronomical Fajr itself and does not build that margin in. If you prefer to stop eating at imsak, take that time from your own mosque and treat the figure here as the outer limit.

Friday, and where the congregation goes

Jumu'ah replaces Dhuhr for those attending, and the call is anchored to the Dhuhr time in this table. Ariana's proximity to the capital means a proportion of its residents attend Friday prayer in Tunis rather than locally, particularly those already there for work, so congregation sizes at the governorate's own jawami vary more by day of the week than the timetable would suggest.

Khutbah length and iqama timing are set by each mosque individually. The figure here tells you when the window opens, not when your imam will begin.

Checking the direction of prayer

Ariana is close enough to Tunis that a bearing established for one serves the other without meaningful error.
