Twenty kilometres from Sousse, and what that is worth
Monastir sits at about 35.76 degrees north and 10.81 degrees east, on a small peninsula pushing into the Gulf of Hammamet. Sousse lies roughly twenty kilometres up the coast at 35.83 north and 10.64 east. The two are close enough that most of the difference between their prayer times comes from longitude rather than latitude, and 0.17 degrees of longitude is worth about forty seconds.
Forty seconds does not survive rounding to the minute. On most days this table and the Sousse one will show the same figure for every prayer; occasionally one will tip a minute earlier. If you are travelling between the two, you do not need to change timetable. That is a useful thing to know and there is no reason to obscure it.
The ribat and a horizon that is mostly water
The ribat at Monastir is one of the oldest surviving fortified monasteries on the North African coast, and the old town sits directly on the sea. That gives much of the city an unobstructed eastern and southern horizon, which is relevant to two prayers in particular.
Sunrise and Maghrib are defined by the sun's upper limb crossing the horizon. Our calculation uses the standard sea-level horizon, which is very nearly what an observer on the Monastir seafront actually has. Inland, where terrain and buildings raise the effective horizon, the observed sunset arrives slightly before the calculated one. Here the two agree more closely than they do almost anywhere inland in Tunisia. It is a small effect, well under a minute, but it is real and it runs in the opposite direction from what most people assume.
The convention behind these figures in Monastir
Tunisia's Ministry of Religious Affairs publishes one national convention and it is applied to every city, this one included: eighteen degrees of solar depression for Fajr and eighteen again for Isha. The symmetry is worth noting because it is unusual. Most authorities split the two, and Tunisia's larger neighbours do: Egypt uses 19.5 and 17.5, Algeria and Morocco each publish their own separate figures.
Nothing about Monastir's coastal position changes the angles. What changes is only the moment the sun reaches them at this longitude and latitude.
Asr, and the rule Tunisia works to
Under Maliki reckoning, which governs here as across the country, Asr opens when a vertical object's shadow has lengthened to match its own height, counted on top of whatever shadow it was already casting when the sun was at its highest. The Hanafi rule doubles that, waiting until the shadow is twice the object's height, and the resulting time falls something like forty to sixty minutes later.
Our table uses the Maliki threshold because that is what Tunisian mosques use. Visitors from Turkey, Pakistan or the Indian subcontinent who are accustomed to the Hanafi timing will find Asr here earlier than they expect. Both positions are established; the table simply reflects local practice.
A resort city, and a working one
Monastir has an international airport and a substantial seasonal tourist population alongside its permanent residents, and the two experience the timetable quite differently. For residents the pattern is the ordinary Tunisian one. For visitors, the practical point is that hotel and resort schedules are built around arrival flights rather than around prayer, so the monthly calendar on this page is more useful than assuming a venue will announce anything.
The seasonal swing at just under thirty-six degrees north is moderate by Tunisian standards, wider than Gabes in the south and narrower than Bizerte in the north. Summer nights are short enough to compress the gap between Isha and Fajr noticeably, without approaching the difficulty faced at genuinely high latitudes.
Fasting on the Sahel coast
During Ramadan the two figures that matter are the Fajr that ends the pre-dawn meal and the Maghrib that opens the fast. Both are in the daily table, and the monthly view gives the whole month at once, which is the practical way to plan around a fast rather than checking day by day.
Tunisia does not adjust its clocks seasonally, so a monthly calendar printed at the start of Ramadan stays accurate to the end of it. That is not true in every country we cover: Morocco suspends its usual offset for the month entirely, and Egypt moves its clocks in and out of summer time. Here the only movement is the sun's.
Note as elsewhere that many mosques announce an imsak several minutes ahead of the calculated Fajr. We publish the astronomical figure and leave the precautionary margin to you and your mosque.
Friday in a small city
Jumu'ah takes the place of Dhuhr for those who attend, and the call goes out at the Dhuhr time given above. In a city of Monastir's size the main jawami fill well before the khutbah begins, particularly outside the tourist season when the resident population dominates.
Arrival time is a matter for you and sermon length a matter for the imam. What this page fixes is only the point at which the Dhuhr window opens.
Orientation from the peninsula
Use the qibla tool on this site rather than a remembered direction. It computes the great circle bearing from the coordinates you give it, which is the correct calculation and not the same as the direction that looks right on a flat map. For a fixed installation in a building, have the bearing surveyed properly: a phone compass near reinforced concrete, or anywhere close to the steel of a marina or a port, is not reliable enough to set a permanent orientation.
