The southern end of the Tunisian table

Gabes lies on the gulf that shares its name, near 33.88 degrees north and 10.10 degrees east. It is a coastal oasis — date cultivation and the sea occupy the same stretch of ground, which is uncommon around the Mediterranean. The second concerns the night. Tunisia sets both dawn and nightfall at eighteen degrees of solar depression, and around midsummer the sun stays below that threshold for roughly six hours here, against a little over five and a half on the northern coast. That extra half hour between Isha and Fajr is the most useful thing on this page for anyone fasting through a summer month.

In winter the comparison inverts, and northern Tunisia gets the longer nights.

The angles in force

A fixed clock

Tunisia holds UTC+1 throughout the year and operates no summer time. Everything the table does from one month to the next is therefore the sun's movement rather than an adjustment made to the clock. Worth knowing if you are comparing against a European city, where part of any apparent shift comes from the clock itself rather than from astronomy.

The Maliki threshold at Asr

Ramadan compared with the capital

The fast runs between Fajr and Maghrib, and both move across the month. Sunrise, listed separately, ends the window for praying Fajr and has no role in bounding the fast — a distinction that matters more than it sounds, because an eighteen-degree dawn angle places Fajr a long way ahead of first light.

Isha follows an angle rather than a set count of minutes after sunset, so the interval between iftar and taraweeh is not constant through the year. The monthly view shows the drift; a single day's row does not.
