The hinge of the southern timetable

Benin City stands at about 6.34 degrees north and 5.60 degrees east, roughly midway in longitude between Lagos in the west and Enugu in the east. That puts it at the pivot of southern Nigeria's prayer table: about nine minutes ahead of Lagos, and about eight minutes behind Enugu.

The two figures are almost equal, which is the useful thing about this city. Whichever way you travel along the southern belt from here, the times move by a comparable amount and in a predictable direction. Every degree of longitude is worth four minutes of sun, and Nigeria runs one clock across the whole span, so all of that difference is real rather than an artefact of timekeeping.

Why a southern calendar does not survive the journey

Lagos and Enugu are both in the south, both at almost identical latitude, and their prayer times differ by more than a quarter of an hour. That surprises people, because the two cities feel like they belong to the same band of the country.

Latitude is not what separates them; longitude is, and they are four degrees apart in it. Benin City sits between them and shares the confusion by proxy — a timetable brought here from either direction will be out by the better part of ten minutes. That is enough to matter at both ends of a fasting day, and it does not shrink at any time of year.

The convention applied unchanged

These figures use the Muslim World League parameters: eighteen degrees of solar depression for Fajr and eighteen again for Isha, on a fixed UTC+1 clock with no seasonal change anywhere in the country. Asr, and the two shadow lengths

The afternoon salah is listed at the threshold used by the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools: the moment an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond the shadow it cast at midday. Nigerian practice is overwhelmingly Maliki, so this is what mosques here work to.

The Hanafi school waits for that growth to double and reaches Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later. Both readings are old and well argued; a published table has to choose one. If your phone shows the later figure, check whether it has been left on the Hanafi setting, and note that the other four prayers are identical under either.

How much the year actually moves this table

At a little over six degrees north, Benin City is close enough to the equator that the annual movement is slight. Day length runs from about twelve hours and twenty minutes at the June solstice to about eleven hours and forty at the December one — three quarters of an hour of range across the entire year.

That is worth stating without embellishment. Fajr and Isha drift by a few minutes and drift back. There is no month in which the schedule transforms, and no changeover weekend on which it jumps, because Nigeria keeps a fixed offset year round.

A minority community in a very old city

Edo State is predominantly Christian and the Muslim population of Benin City is a minority, though a long-settled one rather than a recent arrival. What that changes is the geography of prayer rather than the arithmetic: mosques are clustered in particular quarters rather than spread evenly across the city, so the walk to a jumu'ah congregation is often longer than a resident of the north would expect, and the main mosques draw from a wider catchment than their size suggests.

A fasting day that varies by under an hour

From Fajr to Maghrib, the Ramadan fast here runs somewhere between about twelve and three quarter hours and about thirteen and a half, depending on where in the year Ramadan falls. The gap between the longest and shortest possible fasting day in this city is therefore well under an hour — a consequence of being close to the equator, and a genuine practical advantage over higher latitudes where the same month can mean anything from eleven hours to nineteen.

Sunrise is listed in the table but bounds neither end of the fast. It marks the point after which Fajr may no longer be prayed, which is a separate matter and one that is regularly confused during Ramadan.

Friday, orientation and adjacent tables
