Less than five degrees from the equator

Port Harcourt lies at roughly 4.82 degrees north and 7.05 degrees east, closer to the equator than any other Nigerian city on this site. That single fact governs the character of this page.

Day length here runs from about twelve hours and seventeen minutes at the June solstice to about eleven hours and forty-three at the December one. The whole annual range is a little over half an hour. Kano, at the northern end of the country, swings by around an hour and a half — itself modest — and a city in northern Europe by eight hours or more. There is effectively no seasonal story to tell in Port Harcourt, and inventing one would be dishonest.

What that steadiness is actually worth

It has a real practical benefit. A monthly table here stays close to accurate for months rather than weeks, and there is no seasonal clock change in Nigeria to disturb it. Asr enters when an upright object's shadow has grown by an amount equal to the object's own height, measured beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholarship agree on that threshold, and Nigerian practice is predominantly Maliki.

The Hanafi position requires that growth to double and reaches Asr something like forty minutes to an hour later. It is a difference of school rather than of calculation, and it affects only this one prayer. A Muslim minority in the Niger Delta

Rivers State is predominantly Christian, and the Muslim community in Port Harcourt is a minority — though a settled one, drawn both from long-resident families and from people who have come south for work in the energy sector and the port.

Mosques are concentrated in particular districts rather than distributed evenly, so the journey to jumu'ah is often longer here than it would be in a northern city, and congregations at the main mosques are correspondingly larger than their catchment suggests. A great deal of work in this city runs continuously — the port, the terminals, the refineries — and during Ramadan those rotas cut across both boundaries of the fast rather than fitting around them.

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar. Sunrise appears in the table but marks neither; it closes the window in which Fajr may still be prayed. The advantage of a place this close to the equator is that a shift plan built around the first night of Ramadan will still be nearly right on the last, since the times drift by only a few minutes across a month.
