Abuja's meridian, a degree and a half to the north

Kaduna lies at about 10.51 degrees north and 7.42 degrees east. That longitude is within two hundredths of a degree of the federal capital's, which is a matter of seconds — for the purposes of this table, Kaduna and Abuja sit on the same line of longitude.

The pair therefore make an unusually clean comparison. Whatever differs between their prayer times cannot be an east-west effect, because there is no east-west separation worth counting. Both run about sixteen minutes ahead of Lagos and about twenty-three behind Maiduguri. What separates them is a degree and a half of latitude, and latitude does something quite different from longitude.

How far apart the two tables can actually drift

Longitude shifts a whole table by a fixed amount. Latitude changes the length of the day, so its effect is seasonal, symmetrical about midday, and it reverses twice a year.

Because the two cities share a meridian, their Dhuhr is effectively identical every day of the year. Around the June solstice Kaduna's day is a few minutes longer than Abuja's, so sunrise here comes marginally earlier and sunset marginally later. In December it inverts and Kaduna has the shorter day. Near the equinoxes the two tables agree almost exactly. The divergence never exceeds a handful of minutes in either direction, which is worth knowing chiefly because it means there is no single offset to memorise between them — the sign flips.

One clock across ten degrees of country

Nigeria keeps a single time zone from Lagos at three and a half degrees east to Maiduguri at just over thirteen. That is nearly ten degrees of longitude, and at four minutes to the degree it amounts to close to forty minutes of genuine difference in when the sun sets.

Kaduna sits a little north of the middle of that span. A table from here is roughly a quarter of an hour out for the south-west and roughly twenty minutes out for the far north-east, in opposite directions. Neither error is small enough to ignore during Ramadan.

Eighteen degrees at both ends, and no seasonal clock change

The calculation uses the Muslim World League convention — eighteen degrees of solar depression for Fajr and eighteen again for Isha — on a fixed UTC+1 clock. A consequence of the symmetric angles, combined with the steep angle at which the sun sets at this latitude, is that the interval between Maghrib and Isha holds close to an hour and a quarter all year. It does not stretch and contract seasonally the way it does in North Africa or Europe.

The shadow threshold this page uses

Asr enters when an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday. That is the position of the Maliki school, which predominates across northern Nigeria, and it is shared by the Shafi'i and Hanbali schools.

The Hanafi threshold requires the shadow to grow by twice the object's height, arriving roughly forty minutes to an hour later. An application left on that setting is the usual explanation when a phone and a nearby mosque disagree about the afternoon salah. The remaining four times are unaffected.

A city on the seam, and what that changes

Kaduna sits where the predominantly Muslim north meets the more religiously mixed middle belt, and both communities are substantial in the city. That shapes the practical geography of prayer — where mosques are concentrated, how large Friday congregations are in a given district, how far people travel to reach one.

It has no bearing at all on the arithmetic. The times on this page are the same calculation used in Kano and in Port Harcourt, applied to Kaduna's coordinates. Devotional life varies enormously across Nigeria; the astronomy underneath it does not vary at all.

The two salah that bound the fasting day

During Ramadan, Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar. Sunrise is listed in the table but bounds neither — it marks the point after which Fajr may no longer be prayed, which is a different thing entirely and is worth keeping straight.

Because Kaduna's annual range is only about an hour and a quarter of day length, the fasting day changes little across a month. The larger risk is a borrowed calendar: one shared from Lagos will show iftar around a quarter of an hour late here, and one from Maiduguri around twenty minutes early.

Jumu'ah, orientation and adjacent tables
