The last city in Nigeria the sun reaches

Lagos sits at roughly 6.52 degrees north and 3.38 degrees east, further west than any other Nigerian city on this site. Every salah here enters later on the clock than it does anywhere else in the country, and the margin is not small.

Maiduguri, at the far north-eastern corner, lies close to ten degrees of longitude east of here. The sun covers a degree every four minutes, so Maghrib in Maiduguri arrives roughly forty minutes before Maghrib in Lagos — on the same clock, on the same day, all year round. Kano is about twenty-one minutes ahead, Abuja about sixteen, Enugu about sixteen and a half. Nigeria keeps one time zone across the whole of that span, which means a schedule copied from a northern relative is not merely approximate here. It is wrong by a quarter of an hour or more.

Three quarters of an hour behind the timekeeping

There is a second consequence of that western position. Nigerian standard time is reckoned from the meridian at fifteen degrees east, and Lagos lies nearly twelve degrees west of it.

The effect is that the sun here runs about three quarters of an hour behind the clock — the largest such lag in the country. Solar noon, and therefore Dhuhr, falls appreciably later relative to the working day than it does in the north. Anyone who has moved down from Kano or Kaduna will notice that the whole rhythm of the day sits later against the office clock, without a single prayer having been calculated differently.

A year that barely moves in Lagos

At six and a half degrees north, Lagos is close enough to the equator that the seasonal drama familiar from higher latitudes simply does not happen. Day length runs from about twelve hours and twenty minutes at the June solstice to about eleven hours and forty at the December one — a total annual range of well under an hour.

It is worth stating that plainly rather than inventing variation. Fajr and Isha shift by a few minutes across the year and then shift back. A printed monthly table stays useful for far longer here than it would in North Africa or Europe, and there is no seasonal clock change in Nigeria to disturb it either. What movement there is comes almost entirely from the equation of time — the sun's own irregularity through the year — rather than from the tilt of the earth's axis.

The convention behind these figures

Nigeria's tables on this site use the Muslim World League parameters: eighteen degrees of solar depression for both Fajr and Isha, applied to the coordinates above on a fixed UTC+1 clock. The symmetry matters. Because dawn and nightfall use the same angle, and because the sun rises and sets almost vertically this close to the equator, the gap between Maghrib and Isha here holds at a little over an hour and a quarter throughout the year. Where the afternoon salah falls

Asr is placed at the point where an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday. That is the threshold used by the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, and Nigerian practice is predominantly Maliki, so it is what mosques here work to.

The Hanafi threshold waits for that growth to double and reaches Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later. You will encounter it occasionally in Lagos among communities with South Asian or Turkish connections. It is a difference of school rather than of arithmetic, and it touches no other prayer in the table.

A large Muslim population in a Christian-majority region

Lagos sits in the south-west, where the population overall is majority Christian, but the Muslim community here is very large in absolute terms and long established, particularly among Yoruba families. What that means practically is not a different calculation but a different geography of prayer.

Mosques are unevenly distributed across the metropolitan area rather than spaced regularly as they are in a northern city, and in many districts the nearest jumu'ah mosque is a longer journey than a northern resident would expect. That, plus traffic, is what most people are actually planning around when they check this page — not the astronomy, which is stable, but whether they can reach a congregation before the iqama.

Ramadan, and the mistake worth avoiding

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar. Sunrise appears in the table but bounds neither; it marks the end of the window in which Fajr may still be prayed.

The recurring error in Lagos is the imported calendar. A Ramadan timetable brought from Kano or shared from Abuja will have iftar arriving fifteen to twenty minutes early here, which means a household following it breaks the fast before Maghrib has entered. Because the Lagos year is so stable, the monthly table changes little from week to week — but the difference between cities does not shrink at all, and that is the one to watch.
