Four and a half minutes from Lagos, and a different religious geography

Ilorin lies at about 8.48 degrees north and 4.54 degrees east. Astronomically it belongs to the south-west without qualification: barely more than a degree of longitude separates it from Lagos, which works out at four and a half minutes of sun. Every salah here enters that much earlier than in Lagos, on every day of the year.

Religiously the city does not fit that grouping nearly so neatly. Ilorin is Yoruba-speaking and geographically southern, but it became part of the Sokoto Caliphate in the nineteenth century and has been predominantly Muslim ever since, with an emirate structure of the kind found across the north. It is the clearest place in Nigeria where the astronomy and the demography point in different directions, and this page is about the first while acknowledging the second.

What the table shares with the south-west

The offsets settle the question. Ibadan is around two and a half minutes behind this page, Lagos four and a half, Benin City four and a half ahead. Those are all small enough that the tables are broadly interchangeable in practice.

Move north or east and it changes. Abuja is about eleven and a half minutes ahead, Kaduna and Zaria around twelve, Kano sixteen, and Maiduguri close to thirty-four and a half. Nigeria keeps a single clock across nearly ten degrees of longitude, so a timetable brought down from an emirate city further north will be meaningfully early here despite the shared tradition.

Maliki practice, this far south

Legal practice in Ilorin follows the Maliki school, as it does across northern Nigeria, and Qadiriyya and Tijaniyya affiliations are present in the city. Islamic scholarship here has its own long-established standing rather than being an outpost of anywhere else.

None of that changes the arithmetic on this page. Where the Maliki position does enter the table is at Asr, and that is the only prayer where the schools genuinely diverge. Everything else is a matter of local congregation practice — chiefly how long a mosque waits between the adhan and the iqama — which is decided mosque by mosque rather than by any school or authority.

The afternoon threshold

Asr is entered when an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholarship agree on that measurement, and it is the one published here.

The Hanafi threshold waits for the shadow to grow by twice the object's height and reaches Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later. If an application on your phone shows the later time while the mosque calls the earlier, the setting is almost certainly the reason. The remaining four prayers are unaffected.

Eighteen degrees at both ends, on a clock that never shifts

The calculation uses the Muslim World League convention: eighteen degrees of solar depression for Fajr and eighteen for Isha, applied to Ilorin's coordinates on a fixed UTC+1 offset. How far the year carries the table

At about eight and a half degrees north, Ilorin sits between the very stable south and the marginally more variable north. Day length runs from roughly twelve and a half hours at the June solstice to about eleven and a half at the December one — under an hour of movement across the entire year.

Because the two twilight angles are equal and the sun descends steeply at this latitude, the interval between Maghrib and Isha holds close to an hour and a quarter in every month. The fasting month in a Muslim-majority southern city

Ilorin observes Ramadan on a scale unusual for a city at this longitude, with the working rhythm of the whole city shifting rather than a portion of it. Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar.

Sunrise appears in the table but bounds neither boundary of the fast — it marks the point after which Fajr may no longer be prayed, which is a separate matter. Since the times drift only slightly across a month here, a plan made at the start of Ramadan holds well to the end. The correction to make is spatial rather than seasonal: a calendar shared from Kano would put iftar sixteen minutes early for this city.

Friday prayer stands in place of Dhuhr for those attending and is timed from the Dhuhr entry above. Congregations in this city are large by the standards of the south-west, and the bigger mosques leave longer between the call and the standing because people arrive from further away.
