The one Nigerian city high enough for elevation to enter the argument

Jos lies at roughly 9.90 degrees north and 8.86 degrees east, on the Jos Plateau at something over twelve hundred metres above sea level. That makes it far and away the highest city on Nigeria's list, and it raises a question none of the other eleven pages needs to address: does height change when the sun rises and sets?

In principle it does. An observer standing high above the surrounding land sees slightly over the curve of the earth, so the horizon sits a little below the true horizontal. At twelve hundred metres that dip is around one degree. Since the sun descends at roughly fifteen degrees an hour at this latitude, one degree is worth about four minutes — four minutes of extra visible daylight at each end of the day.

Why the real figure is smaller than that

The four-minute calculation assumes the ground falls away to sea level immediately in every direction, and on the Jos Plateau it does not. The surrounding land is elevated too. What matters is your height above the horizon you can actually see, not your height above the sea, and in the middle of the plateau those are very different quantities.

So the genuine effect in central Jos is smaller than four minutes and varies with where you stand — largest for someone near the escarpment edge looking out over the lower country, close to nothing for someone in a built-up district with the plateau surface stretching away on all sides. There is no single correction that would be right for the whole city.

Which figure to follow

The published one. Prayer times everywhere in the world are computed for a level horizon at ground level, and that convention is not an oversight — it is what makes a table usable. The mosques of Jos work to the same unadjusted calculation as the mosques of Kano.

Sunrise is not a prayer time in any case; it marks the end of the window in which Fajr may still be performed. The place where elevation is most likely to be noticed is Maghrib, and there the answer is straightforward: follow the listed time and the congregation, not the last sliver of sun visible from a particular ridge.

Twenty-two minutes ahead of Lagos

Longitude puts Jos about five and a half degrees east of Lagos, which at four minutes to the degree comes to roughly twenty-two minutes. Every salah here enters that much earlier on the clock, on every day of the year, with no seasonal variation.

Nearer neighbours are much closer: Kano is about a minute ahead of this page and Zaria around four and a half minutes behind. Maiduguri, at the eastern extreme, is about seventeen minutes ahead. Nigeria runs a single clock across nearly ten degrees of longitude, so all of these gaps are the sun's doing.

The parameters in use

At just under ten degrees north the annual range is modest: day length runs from about twelve and a half hours in June to about eleven and a half in December, a little over an hour across the whole year. The interval between Maghrib and Isha holds near an hour and a quarter in every month.

Where the afternoon salah is placed

Asr enters when an upright object's shadow has extended by the object's own height beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday — the threshold used by the Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali schools, and Nigerian practice is predominantly Maliki.

The Hanafi threshold doubles that requirement and arrives roughly forty minutes to an hour later. It is a difference of school rather than of accuracy, and it affects this prayer alone.

A city where north meets middle belt

Plateau State sits at the meeting of the predominantly Muslim north and the religiously mixed middle belt, and Jos has substantial Muslim and Christian populations. That shapes mosque density district by district and the size of Friday congregations, and it is worth knowing when working out how far you will need to travel and how early to set off.

It has no effect whatever on the calculation. These are the same figures produced by the same method used everywhere else in the country, applied to this city's coordinates and elevation-independent as described above.

Ramadan, Jumu'ah and the direction of prayer

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar; because the year moves so little here, both drift only slightly across a month, and a plan made at the start of Ramadan holds reasonably well to the end. The error to guard against is a borrowed calendar — one from Lagos would put iftar twenty-two minutes late for this city.
