Lagos's own parallel, sixteen minutes of sun to the east

Enugu sits at roughly 6.52 degrees north and 7.51 degrees east. That latitude is not approximately Lagos's — it is Lagos's, to the second decimal place. The two cities lie on the same parallel and differ only in longitude, by a little over four degrees.

That makes this the cleanest comparison anywhere in Nigeria. Because the latitudes match exactly, both cities have identical day lengths on every date of the year and identical seasonal behaviour. The only difference is that the sun reaches Enugu first, by about sixteen and a half minutes. Nothing stretches, nothing compresses; the entire table is simply shifted.

A single offset that holds on every date

The practical value of that is predictability. Whatever the season, whatever the prayer, Enugu runs sixteen or seventeen minutes ahead of Lagos — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha without distinction. There is no month in which the gap widens and none in which it closes.

The same logic scales across the country. Port Harcourt, almost directly south, is within about two minutes of this page. Abuja is under a minute ahead. Maiduguri, at the eastern extreme, is around twenty-three minutes ahead, and that too is a fixed quantity. Nigeria keeps one clock across nearly ten degrees of longitude, so every one of these differences is astronomical rather than administrative.

Where the afternoon salah enters

Asr is placed at the point where an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond whatever shadow it cast at midday. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholarship all agree on that threshold, and Nigerian practice is predominantly Maliki, so it is the reckoning in general use.

The Hanafi school requires the shadow to grow by twice the object's height, which places Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later. Where a phone and a nearby mosque disagree about the afternoon, that setting is the usual explanation. Nothing else in the table changes between the two readings.

A minority community in the south-east

Enugu State is predominantly Christian and the Muslim population of the city is a minority — long-settled in part, and in part made up of people who have come south for trade, study and work. Mosque provision reflects that: concentrated in particular quarters rather than distributed across the city, with the main mosques drawing from a wide catchment.

The consequence for someone deciding when to set off is the journey rather than the timetable. A year that moves by under an hour

Enugu shares Lagos's near-equatorial latitude and therefore its stability. Day length runs from about twelve hours and twenty minutes at the June solstice to about eleven hours and forty at the December one, a total annual range of well under an hour.

It is worth saying that plainly. There is no season here in which the schedule transforms. Fajr and Isha shift by a few minutes across the year and shift back, and the interval between Maghrib and Isha holds near an hour and a quarter in every month because the two twilight angles are equal and the sun sets almost vertically at this latitude. A monthly table stays broadly usable far longer than it would at higher latitudes.

Ramadan, and the correction that actually matters

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar. Sunrise is listed but marks neither; its role is to close the window in which Fajr may still be prayed, and treating it as the end of the pre-dawn meal is an error of well over an hour rather than a few minutes.

Because the seasonal drift here is so slight, the risk during Ramadan is geographic. A timetable shared from Lagos would put iftar sixteen minutes late for this city, and one from Maiduguri twenty-three minutes early — the second of those meaning a household breaks the fast before Maghrib has entered at all.
