The first place in Nigeria the sun reaches

Maiduguri lies at roughly 11.83 degrees north and 13.15 degrees east, further east than any other Nigerian city on this site by a wide margin. Every salah enters here before it enters anywhere else in the country.

The gap to the other end of Nigeria is the largest internal difference on any of these pages. Lagos sits nearly ten degrees of longitude to the west, and at four minutes to the degree that comes to about thirty-nine minutes. Maghrib arrives here roughly forty minutes before it arrives in Lagos, every single day, with both cities reading the same clock. The one Nigerian city whose sun nearly matches its clock

Nigerian standard time is reckoned from the meridian at fifteen degrees east. Almost every city in the country lies well west of that line, so the sun runs behind the clock — by around three quarters of an hour in Lagos, half an hour in Abuja, twenty-five minutes in Kano.

Maiduguri lies less than two degrees west of the reference meridian, so the lag here is only about seven minutes. This is the one place in Nigeria where solar time and civil time nearly coincide, and it is why the whole rhythm of the day sits earlier against the working clock than it does anywhere else in the country. Someone arriving from Lagos notices it immediately, without a single prayer having been calculated differently.

Borno, and a very old Islamic tradition

Islam has been established in this part of the Lake Chad basin for a very long time — the Kanem-Bornu polity was among the earliest Muslim states in West Africa, and Borno's religious scholarship has its own lineage rather than being an extension of anywhere else's. None of that alters the five daily times. Legal practice across northern Nigeria is predominantly Maliki, and this table follows the Maliki position on the one prayer where the schools genuinely differ. Because the two angles are equal and the sun descends at a steep angle at this latitude, the interval between Maghrib and Isha stays close to an hour and a quarter in every month. It does not open out in summer and close in winter the way it does further north in Africa.

Where Asr is placed in Maiduguri

Asr enters when an upright object's shadow has grown by the object's own height beyond the shadow it already cast at midday. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali scholarship agree on that threshold and it is the one in use here.

The Hanafi school waits for that growth to double, reaching Asr roughly forty minutes to an hour later. If an application shows a later afternoon salah than the mosque you can hear, that setting is the likeliest explanation, and the other four prayers will match exactly.

Sahel latitude, and how far the year moves

At close to twelve degrees north, Maiduguri has one of the wider annual ranges in Nigeria — which still means very little in absolute terms. Day length runs from about twelve hours and forty minutes at the June solstice to about eleven hours and twenty at the December one, so the whole year covers roughly an hour and twenty minutes of movement.

Stated plainly: the seasons barely touch this table. A schedule noted down in one month remains close to correct in the next, and the variable that genuinely matters in Nigeria is not the calendar but which city the figures were computed for.

Ramadan in the north-east

Fajr closes the pre-dawn meal and Maghrib opens iftar. Sunrise is listed but bounds neither; it marks the end of the window in which Fajr may still be prayed, and the two should not be treated as interchangeable.

The specific risk here is the shared calendar, because Maiduguri sits at the extreme of the national spread.
